Burning Man 2026 guide: tickets, transport, packing and phone service

Burning Man 2026 runs from Sunday, August 30 through Monday, September 7 in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. The theme is Axis Mundi. If you still need a ticket, the final OMG Sale opens July 29 at noon Pacific Time and requires advance registration. This guide was checked on July 25, 2026.

Five weeks is enough time to book a bus and buy equipment. It is not enough time to improvise a desert camp after landing. The playa has no shops, ordinary plumbing, dependable cell service, or easy way to replace the one piece of gear left in Reno.

Can you still get a Burning Man 2026 ticket?

Yes, but the timing is tight. Registration for the OMG Sale opened July 20, and the sale begins July 29 at noon PDT. Registration does not guarantee a ticket. Burning Man says the OMG Sale will include all price tiers, with very few tickets at $550 and $675. The $775 tier covers the stated cost per participant.

The sale allows up to two tickets and one vehicle pass per purchase. Taxes and fees are extra. Only expedited US delivery and Will Call are available this late in the season. Check the official ticketing page immediately before buying because availability can change.

STEP, the official Secure Ticket Exchange Program, is the safest resale route. It is scheduled to remain open until August 28, although it pauses during the OMG Sale. Tickets offered above face value plus fees can be canceled. A screenshot of a ticket, a persuasive story, or a seller's social profile is not proof that a resale will get you through the gate.

Do not forget the vehicle pass

Every vehicle driven through the gate needs a vehicle pass, except a motorcycle. A vehicle pass is not an event ticket and does not let you drive around Black Rock City after parking at camp. If you take Burner Express, you do not need one.

Is it too late to plan your first Burn?

It depends on what is already settled. A ticket, transport, shelter, water plan, and way to remove all your waste are the minimum. If two or more of those are still vague, stop shopping for costumes and solve the camp first.

Joining a theme camp is optional. Open camping exists for people who want to build and manage their own setup. That freedom also means bringing shade, shelter, food, water, cooking equipment, lights, first aid, and a waste plan. A theme camp may share infrastructure and work, but ask what dues cover and which shifts or build days are expected before joining.

Going solo is possible. It is easier when someone at home knows your full name, camp name, camp address, transport booking, and return plan. Arrange at least one specific meeting point and time with people you know. Messaging someone after arrival is not a reliable reunion plan.

How to get to Burning Man from Reno or San Francisco

Reno-Tahoe International is the closest major airport. Black Rock City is roughly 120 miles north, and the final roads are rural. There is no normal public transit to the gate.

The 2026 Burner Express Bus runs inbound services from August 28 through September 3 and returns from September 4 through September 8. Your event ticket or order number and photo ID are checked before boarding. Standard tickets include two pieces of luggage and a carry-on; bikes, water, and extra baggage require the relevant add-on.

At RNO, the Burner Express check-in is near Door D in baggage claim and pickup is outside near Door C. The airport's current Burning Man page also shows Air Playa Info, baggage rules, and Burner Express Air details. Book the bus around your actual flight. International arrivals need room for immigration, baggage, shopping, and a missed connection.

Some Reno buses include a one-hour shopping stop. One hour goes quickly when you need food, water, batteries, toiletries, and camp hardware. Make a list by store aisle and do not assume the last supermarket before the desert will have every item left.

If you drive

Fill the tank before Highway 447. Do not wait on the shoulder, in Gerlach, or near the gate before opening. The official gate guidance says opening-rush waits can reach five hours or more and that bad weather can close the gate temporarily. Pack water, food, medication, and a toilet plan where they can be reached without unloading the car.

Tune a battery radio to BMIR 94.5 for hourly traffic reports and GARS 95.1 near the entrance. The BRC Dashboard carries traffic and weather updates while mobile service is available. On the way out, Monday is often the busiest exodus period. Do not schedule a tight flight after leaving camp.

Tent, RV, theme camp, or open camping?

Tent in open camping

This is the lightest and least expensive setup. It also leaves you responsible for every piece of shade and dust protection. A small festival tent without serious stakes, shade, and a warm sleep system is not enough for a week on the playa.

Theme camp

A well-run camp can provide shared shade, a kitchen, water systems, power, or social structure. None of that is automatic. Ask for a written list of included infrastructure, dues, required shifts, arrival dates, and what you still bring yourself.

RV or camper van

An RV gives better shelter from dust and temperature changes, but it brings cost, fuel, waste tanks, mechanical risk, and rental restrictions. Confirm in writing that the rental company permits Black Rock Desert use. A generator, air conditioner, shower, and toilet each create another supply or waste problem.

Burner Express camping

Passengers arriving before the public gate opens can use the bus ticket as their early-arrival credential. Unplaced passengers must follow the reserved-camping rules listed by Burner Express. HOVerlandia is a designated area for bus travelers. You cannot reserve empty space for friends who arrive later.

How much water do you need at Burning Man?

The official baseline is 1.5 gallons per person per day for drinking, washing, and cleaning. For one person staying eight days, that is 12 gallons before adding any reserve. Two people staying eight days need 24 gallons. Use the calculator above for your group.

That total is heavy. Twelve US gallons weigh about 100 pounds before counting containers. Decide who buys it, how it reaches camp, where it stays shaded, and how empty containers leave the playa. Burner Express sells water add-ons on eligible bookings, but check the current collection and container instructions before assuming it solves the whole camp plan.

Carry a full reusable bottle whenever you leave camp. Keep separate water and snacks for the road, gate queue, and exodus. If a camp says it provides water, confirm the amount per person and the backup plan.

What to pack for Burning Man 2026

This is the short list that protects the trip. The official Survival Guide has the complete list.

• Ticket or Will Call confirmation and government photo ID
• 1.5 gallons of potable water per person per day
• Food for the whole stay plus delay food
• Shade, windworthy shelter, warm bedding, and rain gear
• Goggles and a fitted particle mask for dust storms
• Sunscreen, sunglasses, medication, and a first-aid kit
• Headlamp, spare batteries, and strong lights for your body and bike
• A simple bicycle, lock, repair kit, and spare tubes
• Reusable cup, bowl, cutlery, and water bottle
• Garbage, recycling, and gray-water plan
• Printed camp address, city map, transport details, and emergency contacts

Temperatures can exceed 100F during the day and approach freezing before dawn. Dust storms can erase visual landmarks, while rain can turn the playa into mud. Secure the structure for wind, keep bedding and medication in sealed bins, and bring footwear that still works when conditions change.

Everything that hits the ground can become MOOP, or matter out of place. Feathers, glitter, loose sequins, disposable glow sticks, and poorly attached costume pieces are bad choices. Bring less loose decoration and more repair tape.

Protect your phone without depending on it

Use a dustproof case or sealed pouch, a wired charging cable, and a power bank stored away from daytime heat. Download the information you need, put the phone in airplane mode when it is hunting for a signal, and keep a paper backup. Dust can clog charging ports, and a power bank does not help if the cable is buried in a different vehicle.

Useful Burning Man apps and offline tools

Download and open the apps before leaving Reno. An app that still needs an account login or map download on playa is not offline-ready.

• BRC Dashboard carries current traffic, gate, weather, and BMIR information when a connection is available.
• BMIR on 94.5 FM carries event and traffic information. Bring a battery radio instead of assuming the stream will load.
• GARS on 95.1 FM carries gate information as you approach Black Rock City.

Burning Man lists Dust and iBurn but does not operate or guarantee them. Save a screenshot of your camp address and pin the location offline. Give your group one plain meeting point that does not depend on a moving art car, an app, or a text message.

For the road, download Nevada offline maps in Apple Maps or Google Maps before departure. Keep the official written directions too. A suggested shortcut across an unpaved road is not worth testing in a rental car full of water.

Will cell phones and internet work at Burning Man?

Sometimes, briefly. That is not the same as dependable service. Burning Man's current emergency guidance describes cellular service in Black Rock City as spotty at best. A phone may connect at an odd hour and fail when tens of thousands of people try at once. Hotspot, voice calls, SMS, and app messages all depend on network capacity.

An eSIM cannot create coverage where the local network has none. It can still be useful at Reno airport, during supply runs, and along the drive while a supported network is available. Set it up before the desert, download maps and tickets, then treat connectivity on playa as a bonus.

Travelers arriving from abroad can compare a United States eSIM for this trip. A North America eSIM makes more sense only when the wider route also includes Canada or Mexico. Check data allowance, validity, activation timing, hotspot rules, and supported networks before buying. What to do in an emergency

Do not make 911 from a mobile phone your first or only plan. Burning Man says the fastest option is to flag down a Black Rock Ranger, law enforcement officer, event staff member, or volunteer with a radio. Someone can also go to a Ranger Outpost or medical station.

Before departure, give family or a trusted contact:

• Your full name and playa name
• Camp name and exact camp address
• Volunteer team or other affiliation
• Vehicle make, color, and license plate
• Inbound and outbound transport details
• The official urgent-message address, [email protected]

The 2026 getting-help page explains current station locations and emergency radio options. An urgent email is not instant delivery. Rangers still need enough information to find one person in a temporary city.

Accessibility planning

Black Rock City covers about six square miles, and the surface can be difficult for wheelchairs, walkers, and anyone with limited mobility. Burning Man licenses accessibility vehicles for participants with movement-limiting disabilities. The 2026 application closes August 12 at noon PDT, and final licensing still requires an on-playa inspection.

The accessibility vehicle criteria explain documentation, dimensions, recent injuries, and vehicle-pass rules. Standard electric wheelchairs and three- or four-wheel mobility scooters do not need this license. Ask a camp about accessible toilets, charging, shade, and transport before paying dues. Do not assume the playa surface or shared infrastructure will match a paved festival site.

Final week checklist

1. Confirm the event ticket, vehicle pass or bus booking, and government ID.
2. Put the camp name and address on paper and in every phone.
3. Calculate water, then assign who buys and carries it.
4. Download Dust or iBurn, Nevada offline maps, tickets, and the Survival Guide.
5. Test shelter, lights, bike, power bank, and every charging cable.
6. Share the emergency contact plan with someone at home.
7. Check the BRC Dashboard, official traffic channels, and weather before leaving Reno.
8. Leave room in the vehicle and luggage for every item and bag of waste coming back.

Burning Man is not a normal festival with a desert theme. It is a temporary city that expects participants to arrive prepared and contribute. The practical work is part of the ticket. Get that part right, and the phone can spend most of the week switched off.

Burning Man 2026 questions

Can I go to Burning Man without joining a camp?

Yes. Open camping is available, and joining a theme camp is not required. You must provide and remove your own shelter, shade, food, water, waste, lights, and other infrastructure. Check the current city map and open-camping rules before arrival.

How much does Burning Man 2026 cost?

OMG Sale event tickets range from $550 to $3,000 before taxes and fees. The $550 and $675 tiers are very limited. A vehicle pass costs $165 plus fees. Transport, shelter, camp dues, food, water, equipment, and waste handling are separate costs.

What is the best way to get to Burning Man from Reno?

Burner Express is the simplest booked option for many flyers because it leaves from RNO, offers faster entry, and does not require a vehicle pass. A car works better for groups carrying bulky camp infrastructure. Reserve either option before flying to Reno.

Will an eSIM work at Burning Man?

It may connect in Reno, along parts of the route, and occasionally in Black Rock City, but it will not solve limited network capacity on the playa. Download everything important before leaving Reno and use radios, staff, and physical meeting points for on-playa plans.

Which Burning Man app works offline?

Dust and iBurn both describe their maps and event guides as offline experiences. Download and open the chosen app before the trip. Keep a paper or screenshot backup of your camp address because no third-party app is guaranteed.
