Umrah apps guide: what to install before you travel

The useful Umrah apps are the ones that complete a real task: checking an official service in Nusuk, booking intercity rail, finding a verified pickup, navigating to a hotel, translating a sign or contacting your group. Install them before departure, sign in where needed and create an offline fallback for every important booking.
You do not need twenty travel apps. A smaller set that you have tested is easier to use when you are tired, moving with luggage or helping a family member.
This is the apps chapter of the practical Umrah guide. It covers digital trip support, not religious rulings.

Nusuk: start with the official platform
Nusuk is the official platform to check first for pilgrimage services, permits and trip information. The exact steps that apply can depend on your visa, residency, nationality and current Saudi rules. Use the official Nusuk information page and follow the links provided there rather than a lookalike result or a message forwarded in a group chat.
The Saudi Ministry guide currently directs visitors to Nusuk for Rawdah booking. Availability and eligibility can change, so treat screenshots from old tutorials as illustrations, not current rules.
Before you rely on the account:
- Download Nusuk from the store link reached through an official Saudi page.
- Use the identity and contact details requested for your own record.
- Complete sign-in while you can still access your normal number and email.
- Check that names and document details match your travel records.
- Save any confirmed booking in the app and as an offline screenshot or file.
- Reopen the app before departure and install pending updates.
Never pay a stranger to create or control an official account for you. Do not share one-time codes, passwords or a Roaming eSIM QR code in a public group.
Haramain train: use the official booking source
Use the Haramain High Speed Railway website to check current schedules, availability, fares, passenger rules and station information. A blog can explain the journey, but only the booking system can show the train that is actually available for your date.
Save these items after booking:
- The ticket for each traveler
- The booking reference
- The passenger name as shown on the ticket
- Departure date, time and station
- Luggage conditions reviewed at checkout
- A map or screenshot for the station entrance
- Your plan from the arrival station to the hotel
Do not plan a tight connection from an international flight. Immigration, baggage, terminal movement and a delayed arrival can all change the real transfer time. The Jeddah airport to Makkah guide explains that arrival sequence. The Makkah to Madinah transport guide covers the intercity journey and published baggage limits.
Maps: save the hotel, not only the city
A search for "Makkah hotel" is not enough when several properties have similar names or entrances. Save the exact property from your booking, then record the written address and phone number.
Create a list with:
- Your Jeddah arrival terminal
- Makkah hotel and its main entrance
- Makkah rail station if you will use it
- Madinah rail station or airport
- Madinah hotel and its main entrance
- Agreed family meeting points
- Your country's embassy or consular contact if relevant
Google Maps offline areas can preserve map detail and driving directions. Offline mode does not include public-transport, walking, cycling, traffic or alternate routes. Save a screenshot of the final approach to the hotel as well, especially if the entrance is inside a complex or on a road that a vehicle cannot reach.
Translation: download languages before you need them
Google Translate supports offline language downloads. Download Arabic and the language you use most while you still have reliable Wi-Fi.
Translation is particularly useful for:
- Showing a driver the written hotel address
- Reading a sign or instruction
- Explaining a simple luggage or pickup problem
- Confirming a meeting point with hotel staff
- Helping a family member who uses a different interface language
Keep critical health information written by a qualified clinician in a form that local medical staff can understand. An automated translation should not be the only record of a serious condition, allergy or medication.
Ride apps: install more than one verified option
King Abdulaziz International Airport currently lists Careem, Uber, Bolt and Jeeny among its on-demand options at Terminal 1, alongside airport taxis. The airport page is evidence that these services can be part of an arrival plan, but it does not promise that every service will have a suitable vehicle at every terminal, city or time.
Careem, Uber and Bolt also publish Saudi Arabia in their own current market directories. Check the pickup pin, vehicle type, driver and registration before entering a car. Compare the live quote with an official taxi or a transfer already arranged by the hotel.
For a large family, wheelchair, child seat or several large bags, confirm the exact requirement rather than assuming the standard vehicle category will work.
Messaging and calls: separate data from a phone number
WhatsApp and similar services use mobile data for messages and app calls. Installing a Roaming eSIM does not normally change the number already registered to the messaging account. Do not choose an in-app option to change the number unless you deliberately intend to move the account.
Most Roaming eSIM travel plans are data-only. They usually do not supply a Saudi phone number, ordinary carrier calls or standard SMS. If an official account or bank may send a code to your usual number, keep access to the home line and check its roaming charges. Set the Roaming eSIM as the mobile-data line and disable automatic data switching if you want to avoid accidental home-line data use.
The calls and SMS guide explains the difference between app communication and carrier voice service.
Set up one shared trip folder
Put the information everyone may need into a protected offline folder or note. Avoid storing sensitive documents in a public link.
Include:
- Flight, hotel and rail confirmations
- Passport and insurance copies stored securely
- Current health documentation required for the traveler
- Hotel addresses and phone numbers
- Group contacts and meeting instructions
- Nusuk confirmations that apply to the trip
- Roaming eSIM setup and support instructions
- A short list of official websites
Give older relatives a printed hotel card as well. A phone can be lost, locked, out of battery or with another family member.
Protect battery and mobile data
Travel apps can keep location, camera, background refresh and uploads active. Review permissions before the trip.
- Allow location only while using an app unless background access has a clear purpose.
- Turn off mobile photo backup and automatic app updates.
- Download media, maps and languages over Wi-Fi.
- Lower screen brightness when practical.
- Carry a charged power bank that meets the airline's cabin rules.
- Close a navigation session when the journey ends.
- Keep the charging cable accessible during transfers.
Use the calculator at the top of the Umrah internet guide to estimate one phone's allowance from maps, messages, calls, uploads and social use.
Test the journey, not just the download
An installed icon does not prove that the app is ready. Run a short pre-departure test:
- Open Nusuk and confirm you can sign in.
- Find the official Haramain page and save it as a bookmark.
- Open each hotel pin and compare it with the booking address.
- Put one route into offline maps and then switch the phone to airplane mode.
- Test an offline translation.
- Open the group chat and confirm every traveler is included.
- Check that the airline and hotel bookings open without searching email.
- Confirm that the Roaming eSIM instructions are available offline.
Next: choose your Jeddah arrival route
Once the phone is ready, use the Jeddah airport to Makkah chapter to choose the first door-to-door transfer. Continue with the Makkah to Madinah transport chapter when the city order is settled. The Umrah packing list keeps the tickets, medicine and charging kit in the right bag.
Frequently asked questions about Umrah apps
Which app is essential for Umrah?
Nusuk is the official platform to check first for the pilgrimage services and bookings that apply to your journey. Maps, translation, rail booking and ride services solve different practical tasks. No single app replaces the rest of the travel plan.
Do I need a Saudi number to use Nusuk?
Account and verification requirements can change and may depend on the traveler's record. Follow the current official Nusuk instructions and use the contact details requested for your identity. Do not assume that a data-only Roaming eSIM includes a Saudi number.
Can I book the Haramain train inside a general travel app?
Third-party travel tools may show options, but use the official Haramain booking source to confirm the current train, passenger conditions, ticket and baggage rules before paying.
Which taxi app works in Makkah and Madinah?
Careem, Uber and Bolt publish Saudi Arabia coverage, and Jeddah airport currently lists them for Terminal 1. Actual pickup availability varies by place and time. Install at least two verified choices and keep an airport taxi or arranged transfer as a fallback.
Will offline Google Maps guide me on foot?
Downloaded areas preserve map detail, but Google's current offline guidance says walking and public-transport directions are unavailable offline. Save the final route as screenshots and keep the written address.
How much data do these apps use?
Maps, text messages and booking checks are usually lighter than video calls, social clips and photo backup. The result depends on usage, not the number of installed apps. Estimate each traveler's daily behavior in the Umrah data calculator.
What if Nusuk or another app does not open after arrival?
Try reliable Wi-Fi, check for an update, confirm the phone's date and time, and use the service's official help path. Keep confirmed bookings offline so a temporary app or connection problem does not erase your only copy.
