Umrah itinerary: flexible 7, 10 and 14-day plans

A good Umrah itinerary protects time for worship, rest and unexpected delays. It does not fill every hour. Start with flights and the city order, place one clear transfer between Makkah and Madinah, add fixed official bookings, then leave space around arrival, departure and physically demanding days.
The plans below are travel frameworks, not a schedule for religious rites. Confirm the rites, ihram, miqat and personal religious questions with a trusted qualified scholar or group leader. Check current official Saudi requirements before booking.
This is the itinerary chapter of the practical Umrah guide.
Decide these five things first
- Which airport you will use on arrival and departure
- Whether Makkah or Madinah comes first
- How many hotel nights belong in each city
- How the group will travel between the cities
- Which bookings have a fixed date or time
Do not choose the number of Makkah and Madinah nights from a template alone. Flights, age, health, walking tolerance, school or work leave, hotel cost and religious priorities all matter.
Makkah first or Madinah first?
Both orders can work.
| Order | Practical advantages | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Jeddah arrival, then Makkah | Direct route into the main purpose of many trips; several road and rail choices from Jeddah | Arrival fatigue, transfer timing, and religious guidance for the route |
| Madinah first, then Makkah | A calmer arrival can suit some flight schedules and groups | Connection from the arrival airport, later Makkah transfer, and religious guidance before that journey |
| Open-jaw flight | Arrive near the first city and depart near the second | Fare, airline schedule, baggage and visa conditions |
| Return through Jeddah | More flight choices may be available | Extra road or rail journey at the end and a safe flight buffer |
Map the route from airport to first hotel and from last hotel to departure terminal. A cheap flight can create an expensive or exhausting ground journey.
The Jeddah airport to Makkah guide compares the arrival choices. The Makkah to Madinah transport guide covers the city transfer.
Seven-day framework
A seven-day trip needs simple logistics and realistic recovery time. Count hotel nights and flight days carefully because a trip sold as seven days may provide fewer full days on the ground.
| Day | Practical plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, complete the first transfer, check in, eat, rest and confirm the next day's essentials |
| 2 | Makkah base day with no optional long-distance travel |
| 3 | Makkah base day, family check-in and laundry or supply reset if needed |
| 4 | Makkah base day or protected buffer for a delayed arrival or required booking |
| 5 | Travel to Madinah, check in and keep the evening light |
| 6 | Madinah base day with only confirmed appointments added |
| 7 | Depart with a safe hotel-to-airport or station buffer |
This split is an example, not a religious recommendation. If the flight lands in Madinah or your priorities differ, reverse the cities and rebuild the transfer day.
For a short trip, avoid changing hotels within the same city unless there is a strong reason. Every move creates packing, checkout, transport and check-in work.
Ten-day framework
Ten days allow more rest and a less fragile city transfer.
| Day | Practical plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrival, hotel transfer and recovery |
| 2 | Makkah base day |
| 3 | Makkah base day |
| 4 | Makkah base day with a light practical task such as laundry or supply restock |
| 5 | Makkah base day or protected buffer |
| 6 | Transfer to Madinah and check in |
| 7 | Madinah base day |
| 8 | Madinah base day with confirmed official booking if applicable |
| 9 | Madinah base day and departure preparation |
| 10 | Airport transfer and departure |
The value of the extra days is not the number of attractions you can add. It is the ability to absorb tiredness, delayed transport or a changed booking without losing the core journey.
Fourteen-day framework
A two-week trip can support a slower pace, recovery days and more resilient travel, but extra nights still need structure.
| Days | Practical focus |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Arrival, check-in and recovery without a tight optional schedule |
| 3 to 6 | Makkah base, with rest and personal planning spread across the stay |
| 7 | Open buffer or city-transfer day depending on bookings |
| 8 | Makkah-to-Madinah or Madinah-to-Makkah transfer and hotel check-in |
| 9 to 12 | Second-city base, including any confirmed official booking |
| 13 | Buffer, packing, document check and final family coordination |
| 14 | Departure with a safe airport or station margin |
Use the buffer deliberately. It can cover a transport change, health need, lost item, laundry, extra rest or a fixed booking that was not available on the preferred day.
Build each day with three layers
Layer 1: fixed commitments
Add flights, hotel check-in and checkout, rail tickets and official bookings first. Nusuk is the official platform to check for services and appointments that apply to the journey. The current Saudi guide directs visitors to Nusuk for Rawdah booking. Availability and rules can change, so use the official Nusuk information, not a copied screenshot.
Layer 2: essential travel tasks
Place meals, medicine, rest, laundry, transport and family coordination around the fixed commitments. These are not empty time. They keep the trip workable.
Layer 3: optional plans
Add optional visits only after the first two layers fit. Keep them easy to remove without disrupting tickets or the group.
This method is more resilient than assigning an activity to every hour.
Make the transfer day lighter
A city change includes packing, checkout, loading, station or road travel, unloading and another check-in. The scheduled train or drive is only one part.
On transfer day:
- Keep documents and medicines in hand luggage.
- Confirm the pickup or station before leaving the hotel.
- Give one person responsibility for tickets and another for luggage count.
- Save the new hotel address on every phone.
- Carry food and water where permitted and appropriate.
- Avoid a fixed appointment immediately after expected arrival.
- Keep a road fallback if the rail plan becomes unavailable.
Haramain currently publishes a defined bag size and weight limit. Check it before the trip in the intercity transport chapter, especially if the flight allows larger luggage.
Plan for older travelers, children and health needs
A family itinerary should move at the pace of the person who needs the most support.
- Request assistance separately from the airline, railway and hotels.
- Ask exactly where wheelchairs or vehicles can meet the traveler.
- Place regular medicine times in the shared schedule.
- Avoid consecutive tight transfers.
- Keep a familiar food, rest and hydration plan.
- Give each child or older traveler a hotel contact card.
- Add a recovery period after the international flight and city transfer.
- Know the closest appropriate help route without turning the trip into a medical plan.
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Health maintains current pilgrim health guidance. Travelers with a condition should seek personal advice from a qualified professional before travel.
Create one shared itinerary that works offline
Use a simple table rather than a long chat history.
| Field | Example of what to save |
|---|---|
| Date | Local calendar date and day |
| Sleeping city | Makkah, Madinah or travel night |
| Hotel | Name, entrance, address and phone |
| Fixed booking | Time, reference and official operator |
| Transport | Pickup point, station, terminal and fallback |
| Group meeting | Named place and time |
| Health note | Medicine or rest reminder without public personal details |
| Offline file | Ticket or booking saved on the device |
Share only what each traveler needs and protect identity documents. Print the hotel and transport details for anyone who may not manage a smartphone under stress.
The Umrah apps guide explains which services to install and how to prepare maps and translation offline.
Add a mobile-data and no-signal plan
Use mobile data for live transport, messages and current official information. Use offline files for anything that could strand the traveler if a connection slows.
Before each city move:
- Test the Roaming eSIM away from hotel Wi-Fi.
- Download the ticket and new hotel address.
- Save the route around the station or terminal.
- Charge phones and power banks.
- Agree on a meeting point and check-in time.
- Turn off automatic uploads if the allowance is limited.
The Umrah data calculator at the top of the internet and phone chapter estimates a per-device allowance. A Saudi Arabia Roaming eSIM is usually sufficient for a Saudi-only itinerary. Compare GCC or wider coverage only when the same trip includes another country.
Common itinerary mistakes
Counting flight days as full city days
An overnight flight, arrival formalities and transfer can consume most of the date. Count usable ground time, not just calendar labels.
Booking a train too close to an international arrival
Immigration, baggage and terminal movement vary. Leave a comfortable margin and understand the ticket's live change terms.
Treating hotel checkout and check-in as instant
The group may wait for rooms or luggage storage. Carry documents, medicine and one essential clothing layer separately.
Making one phone the itinerary
If that phone is lost, flat or with a separated traveler, the group should still know the hotel and next meeting point.
Copying someone else's religious schedule
Religious guidance and personal capacity are not interchangeable. Take the planning framework to a trusted qualified adviser and adapt it.
Adding every optional excursion
The purpose of a longer trip is not to create a more crowded checklist. Keep room for rest and the core journey.

Frequently asked questions about Umrah itineraries
How many days are enough for Umrah?
There is no universal number. Seven days can work with simple logistics; ten days allow more rest; fourteen days create greater flexibility. Flights, city order, health, family needs and religious priorities matter more than a template.
How many days should I spend in Makkah and Madinah?
Choose the split according to your purpose, flights, fixed bookings and the pace of the group. The sample plans give Makkah more nights, but they can be reversed or changed.
Should I go to Madinah before Makkah?
Either order can work. Compare airport routes, fatigue, hotels, transport and religious guidance for the route before booking.
Can I do Makkah and Madinah in seven days?
Yes, if the flights and transfer are straightforward and the group accepts a simpler plan. Protect arrival and transfer time instead of filling every day.
When should I book the Haramain train?
Book when your dates are stable enough and the live ticket conditions suit the risk. Around an international arrival, avoid a tight connection that assumes immediate immigration and baggage.
Do I need Nusuk in the itinerary?
Check the official Nusuk platform for the services and bookings that apply. The current ministry guide directs visitors there for Rawdah booking. Requirements can change.
Should I plan activities on the city-transfer day?
Keep the day light. The full move includes two hotel legs, luggage and check-in, not only the scheduled train or drive.
How do I share the itinerary with parents who do not use apps?
Give them a printed or written daily summary with hotel names, addresses, contact numbers, transport details and meeting points. Keep the digital version as a second copy.
